Home Work Tips

1. Give your student a quiet, well-lit place to work that will be free of distractions and interuptions.

2. Provide the necessary materials ahead of time, such as paper, pencils and pens, erasers, calculators, dictionaries and any other special materials needed for large projects.

3. Establish a specific time each day for homework. Some students do it best right after school, some may need some time to unwind.  However, homework should never be put off until right before bedtime.

4. Allow your child to see you doing your homework as well, this will help with their attitude.

5. Don't do homework for your child, but do provide guidance to help him or her figure out the homework.

6. Stay informed with the classroom rules and the expectations for the students.

7. Watch for signs of frustration and failure, early intervention may go a long way towards resolving problems before they become serious.

8. Reward progress with homework, in their ability as well as their attitude.

9. Do the hard subjects first, it will make the rest go a lot quicker, it will also be easier to get help earlier in the day.

10. Some white noise, such as music can actually be helpful to some students and may increase concentration. Television is too distracting as it becomes engaging and should not be permitted.

11. Taking breaks can be very useful.  For very serious Attention Deficit Hyperactive Children, a break every 20 to 30 minutes is not out of the question.  However, these breaks have to be closely watched so they do not  keep the student from returning to their work.

12. Keep a cheerful attitude with your child and use encouragement to increase their cooperation!
